Application: Tissue analysis by MS
- Tissue analysis by MALDI mass spectrometry requires precise delivery of matrix that will be sufficient to give good MALDI signal. Signal to noise ratios may be enhanced by iterative printing of matrix onto tissue samples.
- Selected regions of tissue can be probed with different matrices depending on the molecule of interest. Typically proteins are ionised with 3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxycinnamic acid (sinapinic acid), whilst peptides and smaller molecules are ionised with alpha-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid (CHCA).

CHIP-1000
Sinapinic acid printed onto mouse brain (1a) and oral cancer tissue sample (1b).
The CHIP-1000 has the capacity to print over large areas, such as an entire microtitre plate; in addition, it can print in selected areas only, for single print positions in a click and print manner.
Image importing is also possible so high resolution fluorescence scans can be overlaid in the CHIP software.
Print position tracking:
The location of all print positions can be traced and exported as a csv file to the mass spectrometer so the exact location for laser firing is known.
The CHIP software incorporates MySQL database structure to experiments keeping a background log of individual user activity, important for treatment of clinical samples.
